Manchester post-punk upstarts Hungry release debut EP, demanding for a better future

Manchester post-punk upstarts Hungry have released their debut EP this week (Wednesday, August 27), in which they dream of and demand a different world to the one they grew up in.

Are You the Best Yet? is the first body of work by the Cambridge-formed, Manchester-based band, exploring relatable themes of self-doubt and defiance over a kinetic soundscape.

The band, fresh from supporting Australian psych outfit Psychedelic Porn Crumpets, have been making waves in the North West since their move - from headlining shows at YES, to raucous pop-up gigs and a string of singles that have captured the imagination of the local community.

However, it may be time for Hungry to grow wings, as they embark on yet another set of shows out of their city.

Frontman Jacob Peck says: "‘Are you the best yet?’ centres around the disassociating quality of late stage capitalism, the disaffection and detachment of the internet age, and the apathy and inaction of the middle classes.

"The song itself sees the transformation of art from a vital part of life with worth in and of itself into a consumable commodity, where artists must compete for supremacy and reach social signifiers of success in order to justify their pursuits.

"Drawing from a childhood in Cambridge and the centring of a semi-Etonian education system and its values, the lyrics of the EP push for a return to the visceral and tactile elements of life and demand that a different way of the world is possible for all."

Hungry support GANS this September, culminating at a show at Yes on Wednesday, September 10.

The band support Heavy Lungs at Bread Shed on Friday, December 6.

Are You The Best Yet? is out now on Sound Recordings.
